The Photographs of David Obermeyer

David Obermeyer has an MFA in film and has worked for years mixing sound for motion pictures and television. Years ago while passing through Gary, Indiana traveling to Chicago from New York on his way to college, the darkened structures and smokestacks of the steel mills spewing flames and steam against a black night was burned into his memory. 40 years later, Obermeyer entered the streets of Gary during a film project and it inspired him to start photographing again, triggering his earliest passion. Growing up in New York City, Obermeyer started playing with cameras at an early age and by high school, had a darkroom where he processed mostly portraits and street images from his 4x5 camera.

For the past two years Obermeyer has been photographing people, abandoned structures and the decay of both public and private spaces in Gary and the devastation that city has had to endure. We are proud to welcome the photographs of David Obermeyer who has recently had work on display at The Chicago Photography Centerwork and is also presently displaying his work at The Perfect Exposure Gallery in Los Angeles.

Obermeyer's photographs will be on display from February 9 - March 18, 2012.
